Inside the precincts and next to the Alcázar there is a neo-classical building known as "The House of Chemistry", built as an extension of the rooms used for teaching in the School of Artillery. The Chemistry laboratory of the Royal School of Artillery was opened in 1792 and directed by the famous French chemist Louis Proust. There he developed the well-known Law of Definite Proportions which bears his name, as well as some important scientific research published in Segovia. In the middle of the square and fenced in with an iron gate, cast in Trubia, there is a memorial to the heroes of May 2nd, dominated by the figure of Clio, goddess of History, sculptured by a Segovian artist named Aniceto Marinas. When the celebration took place for the 1st anniversary of the events of May 2nd, 1808, King Alfonso XIII came to Segovia to lay the memorial foundation stone, paying public homage to the Artillery captains Daoiz and Velarde, former students in the Alcázar, who had begun the revolt and resistance against the Napoleonic invasion. |
