PATRONATO DEL ALCAZAR
(CASTLE TRUST)

Once the restoration works, as a consequence of the fire in 1862, were finished in the Alcázar of Segovia, the Royal Order of January 14th 1896 provided that the building of the Alcázar of Segovia was to be handed over to the Ministry of War by the Ministry of "Fomento" (ministry responsible for public works, buildings, etc.), to be exclusively used as Artillery facilities. Another Royal Order of January 26th 1909 provided that the Colonel Director of the Artillery Academy, on behalf of the arm, was to take over the building, which was partially occupied by the General Military Archives.

At the time and with the co-operation of the different artillery departments, several well-meaning restoration works were carried out as far as the economic resources permitted, but these works did not have the desirable continuity.

To fulfill this need and to maintain the costly upkeep of the building, the Patronato del Alcázar of Segovia was created by decree of the Presidency of the Government on January 18th 1951, which provides that the Army will be perpetual usufructuary of the Alcázar, and the building will always be attached to the Artillery, the spiritual patrimony of which it is part.

It's the Patronato's job to regulate the use of the building and its annexes in the interest of the public cultural tradition; to watch over its upkeep and artistic preservation, and to promote all kind of activities and initiatives related to its importance.

As the Alcázar is a National Monument, the Ministry of National Education (now Ministry of Culture) has to be in charge of its upkeep and artistic preservation.

When the Patronato was set up, they were entrusted with a plan of works that should enable:

  • The Artillery Academy to make use of classrooms exceptionally to give lessons of high educational value, and to make use of the halls for social or cultural events to take place whenever the circumstances require it.

  • The General Military Archives to have installations large and efficient enough to keep their historic documents and files, as long as the building is home to the Archives.

  • The general public to enjoy a "Museum of the Alcázar of Segovia", which should be a registry of all those records that can be used to retain the memory of that "House" which has been a Royal Alcázar, Military Precinct and Royal School of Artillery either simultaneously or successively.
